About Ci2

The Smart Cities Research Center (Ci2) of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT) was founded in 2018. Ci2's primary mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of cities and regions through transdisciplinary and applied research in areas such as Big Data and Decision Support Systems, Monitoring and Control Systems, E-health, Assisted Living, Energy, Mobility, Environment, Efficiency, and Productivity. Ci2 R&D activities focus on two major thematic areas: Intelligent and Pervasive Environments (IPE) and Sustainable Management of Resources (SMR).

Ci2 conducts its research activities in collaboration with a diverse range of partners. These include various laboratories at the IPT, such as VITA.IPT, BIOTEC.IPT, and LINE.IPT and the other IPT R&D centers: Techn&Art and CGEO. Collaborations with national and multinational companies, including Softinsa (IBM group), Critical Software, Altri Group, and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck. Furthermore, collaborations extend to national research centers, including the Institute of Systems and Robotics, the Institute of Telecommunications, and INESC-TEC, as well as national and international institutions within the higher education framework. Moreover, it is essential to emphasize that Ci2's team comprises not only researchers from the IPT and other national institutions, such as Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL/CEU), but also researchers from international institutions, such as the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI), Ukraine, and the Technological University Dublin (TUD), Ireland. This diversity within the Ci2 team fosters internationalization, encourages international partnerships, and supports multidisciplinarity and transversality.

Ci2 is a research unit funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
