Research Lines

Ci2 engages in research within the domains of Information Sciences, Exact Sciences, and Engineering, with an openness to other areas of interest. Our research efforts encompass both experimental development and applied research, with a primary focus on two intersecting research lines:

  • Intelligent and Pervasive Environments (IPE)
  • Sustainable Resources Management (SRM)

Collaborations with other R&D units and industry partners support these initiatives.

Intelligent and Pervasive Environments (IPE)

The Intelligent and Pervasive Environments research at Ci2 for 2025-2029 will focus on three main areas:

  1. Communication Technologies: Research in 5G and 6G, including Large Intelligent Surfaces (LIS) and next-generation WiFi, which aims to enhance network performance in smart cities.
  2. Cyber-Physical Systems: This includes smart sensing systems, human-computer interaction, and AI/ML methods for data integration.
  3. Big Data and Analytics: Focuses on edge computing and data management to support real-time smart city applications.

Sustainable Resources Management (SRM)

The Sustainable Resources Management research line at Ci2 will pursue research on three strategic areas for 2025-2029:

  1. Fuel Cells and Renewable Energy: Research on green hydrogen (H2) production and integration of renewable energy into existing grids.
  2. Smart Grids: Designing smart grid architectures, optimizing local demand response, and exploring bidirectional energy trading.
  3. Wastewater Management: Focus on energy production from water treatment processes and sustainable management of urban areas.
