About

Gabriel Pires is Adjunct Professor at the Engineering Department of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT) and Integrated Researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics - University of Coimbra (ISR-UC), where he leads the brain-computer interface (BCI) group (one of the main groups in Portugal) in the Human-Centered Mobile Robotics Lab. He is also a collaborating researcher at the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research where he collaborates with teams focused on neuroscience research. He obtained his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Coimbra in 2012, on the BCI topic and since then made important contributions to improve the usability of BCIs. He has been supervisor of several BSc, MSc, PhD students, Postdoc and research engineers (> 30 BSc, >20 MSc, 7 PhD (1 concluded, 6 ongoing), 3 Postdocs and >25 research engineers) and has published over 65 papers as author/co-author in high standard journals and international conferences. He is also the coordinator of the Lab. VITA.IPT - Life Assisted by Intelligent Environments - in close collaboration with IPT Smart Cities Research Center (Ci2). He participated, as responsible, member or collaborator, in several National and European R&D projects in the areas of Human-computer interfaces, assistive mobile robotics and telehealth. His main research focus is on EEG-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and biosignal processing, seeking to improve the reliability and usability of BCIs aiming their clinical and non-clinical application. He serves as a reviewer in many scientific journals and scientific committees of several conferences, and as guest editor in several journals. He was the recipient of several national and international awards including the 'PhD Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge' and the '2022 Andrew P. Sage Best Transactions Paper Award on IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems'. In 2021, he integrated the jury of the international 'Annual BCI Award 2021'. He was a member of the board of the Portuguese Society for Rehabilitation and Accessibility Engineering - SUPERA from 2013 to 2015. Gabriel Pires teaches Digital Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Microcontrollers Pogramming, and Data and Telecommunication Networks courses in MSc and BSc degrees ('Electrical and Computer Engineering' and 'Computer Science').
